A man has been seriously injured in a vicious mauling by his pet dog in South Australia.

Emergency services attended Flavel Crescent, Jervois near Tailem Bend just after 3pm on Wednesday following reports of a dog attack.

Witnesses told 7NEWS the owner had attempted to separate two fighting dogs when one turned on him and attacked.

The victim, aged in his 40s, has been flown to Flinders Medical Centre, where he is undergoing emergency surgery.

SA Police confirmed the man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

It is understood police were forced to shoot the pet Dobermann dead.

“Sadly, the dog was euthanized at the request of the council,” a police spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.
